In the following section, I will explain what worked best for me for Ubuntu Linux and Windows 10 as operating systems. In addition, I switched to Ubuntu Linux in 2006 so I could not directly install AoE2 - and I had to find a solution for the changed resolution and aspect ratio. Nowadays, Full HD resolution or more is standard instead of 1024 x 768 and the aspect ratios of modern displays are no longer 4:3. However, I do not have the same 17″ CRT monitor anymore that I used to have when I played this game all night long back in 2000. A few months ago, I wanted to play Age of Empires 2 (AoE2) again (still one of the best real-time strategy video games in my opinion).
